The Problem – Corrosion!!
At 299 Park Ave in New York City, the chilled water risers/stacks were leaking due to pinhole leaks caused by corrosion. With prominent tenants such as UBS, excavation the walls to replace the pipes was not an option.
Pipe lining using cured in place pipe lining (CIPP) was considered, but since the pipes contain transitions in diameter, there was no way to ensure there would be a good seal of overlapping liners at those junctions.
The Solution – Spray-On Epoxy Lining
Since the pipes still had structural strength, a spray-on epoxy lining was chosen to rehabilitate all the pipes. We cleaned and lined more than 2000 feet of cascading chilled water supply and return risers ranging between 11/4″ up to 4″ with a plural based epoxy.
Work was performed over 3 weekends with no disruptions to any tenants in this 45 story building. The process ended up costing approximately 75% less than pipe replacement, saving the owners millions of dollars.
